HOW IT WORKS

Everything you need to know about your t-shirt quilt

Choosing Your Style

The first decision you'll need to make about your t-shirt quilt is whether you want it to be laid out in the traditional grid style or in the more unique and complex mosaic style. But what are the differences and how can you decide? Let me help!

  • Dynamic collage/puzzle layout

  • More complex, intricate design

  • More expensive than grid style

  • Smaller quilt with more t-shirts

  • Perfect for t-shirts with lots of different size graphics/logos

  • Final dimensions of the quilt are more variable and depend heavily on the size and shape of your
t-shirt graphics—a better option if you are flexible on blanket size

  • Takes 3-6 weeks to complete, depending on number of shirts

Mosaic Style

  • Organized, even grid layout

  • Simpler design

  • Budget-friendly

  • Bigger quilt with fewer t-shirts

  • Works well when shirt graphics are mostly similarly sized

  • Final dimensions of the quilt are more predictable based on the number of shirts—a better option if you are looking for an exact size blanket (e.g. to use as a comforter)

  • Takes 2-4 weeks to complete, depending on number of shirts

Grid Style

Still unsure? No problem! Just select "Help Me Choose" on your order form, and I will recommend the best style for your quilt after receiving and looking at your t-shirts.

Selecting Your Quilt Backing

Next, you'll need to pick a color and a material for the fabric on the back side of your quilt. The same material will also be used to created a 2-inch border on the front perimeter of your quilt. I recommend choosing a neutral color, since your t-shirts will likely have lots of different colors and designs—black, dark. or light grey, navy, and cream are all popular options, but feel free to have fun with it!

All quilts will include either an ultra soft, high-quality Polar Fleece or Minky fabric as the backing—these make for a super snuggly and warm feel that can still be easily washed and dried. Alternative fabrics may be able to be used at an additional cost.

Check out some available color options below—please note that color appearance may vary and some color options may not be available for all quilt sizes. If you have a specific color or fabric in mind, please indicate it on your order form.

Prepping & Shipping Your Shirts

The next step of the process is getting your shirts to me. Follow the instructions below to make sure I know exactly which parts of your shirts to use and to ensure you get the perfect quilt!

STEP ONE: WASH AND DRY YOUR T-SHIRTS

Once I receive your shirts, I will start working on your quilt right away. Make sure your shirts are clean before they get to me! And be sure to wash and dry them at least once if they've never been worn before so the material doesn't shrink once it's part of the quilt.

STEP TWO: SORT YOUR SHIRTS INTO PILES

Organize your t-shirts (or sweatshirts, sweatpants, jerseys, etc.!) into piles based on which part of the clothing you would like me to use in the quilt. PLEASE DO NOT CUT YOUR T-SHIRTS YOURSELF! You should end up with four piles:

  1. Use FRONT only

  2. Use BACK only

  3. Use Front AND Back

  4. Special Instructions - attach a note to each shirt in this pile explaining what you'd like. For example, notes might be: "use sleeve graphic only;" "use top half of front graphic;" "use back and sleeve, not front graphic;" or "extra, only use if needed."

Any questions while you're sorting? Check out our FAQs or send me a message!

STEP THREE: BAG/BUNDLE & MARK YOUR PILES FOR SHIPPING

Bag or bundle your piles individually so that they stay separated during shipping. Shopping bags, garbage bags, or large rubber bands all work well for this. Make sure to label each individual package with which pile it is (Front, Back, Front & Back, Misc.) so I know which is which when your package arrives.

STEP FOUR: PACKAGE & SHIP YOUR SHIRTS *

Box up your shirts and ship them to me—you will receive the shipping address once you complete your order form and submit your deposit. PLEASE BE SURE TO INCLUDE THIS SLIP WITH YOUR NAME AND CONTACT INFO INSIDE YOUR BOX WITH YOUR T-SHIRTS.

TIPS FOR SHIPPING:

  • Use a sturdy box that was meant for shipping.

  • Try not to leave any empty space in your box. This can result in tearing or collapsing of the box during shipping. If your box is too big, use some spare shipping materials to fill it up (newspaper, bubble wrap, foam from other packaging, etc.), or cut the box down along the top corners so that the flaps lay down right on top of your shirts.

  • Tape down all open edges of the box top and bottom.

I strongly recommend you get a tracking number for your box so you can make sure your shirts get safely to me!

* Do you live in NYC? I'd be happy to arrange a time for you to drop off

your shirts instead of shipping them if that's a possibility for you!

Approving Your Layout & Any Customizations

Once I receive your t-shirts, I will send you a confirmation email along with a digital layout map of what your quilt will look like and where each t-shirt design will be placed. At that point, I will confirm what the final size and price of your quilt will be; you can let me know if you want to cut back on the number of shirts blocks you're using to adjust the size of the blanket, switch around the placements of the shirts, etc.

Once we're set on your final details, I will send you an electronic invoice for your remaining balance. Then sit back and relax—I'll get to work and in a few short weeks, you'll have a gorgeous, cozy quilt showcasing all your favorite memories!
